Here are some excellent ideas from the Pet Travel Center and the Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) to help you be prepared in case of emergency.
- Microchip or tattoo your pet.
- Be sure your pet ID collar has your name and telephone number(s).
- Keep recent photos of your pet as well as photos of you with your pet to prove ownership.
- Set aside a week’s worth of food and water.
- Place your pet’s medications and medical records in a plastic bag or waterproof container.
- Prepare a pet first aid kit that includes cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape and scissors, antibiotic ointment, flea and tick medication, latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol and saline solution.
- Have extra litter box supplies handy such as newspapers, paper towels and plastic bags.
- In case you need to evacuate, have your pet carrier easily within reach equipped with toys, treats and bedding.
- Have a list of kennels not only in nearby areas but also further away in case those closest to you get filled to capacity.
- Exchange information with trusted friends and neighbors so you can help find or take care of each other and your pets.
