Anyone who has ever owned a pet knows her companion animal is “worth” more than was paid. The emotional bonds formed are invaluable and it is difficult to put a price on “companionship”. However there are various legal formulas to do so when a person is lost.

However, up to now, state law has dictated that pets are property and owners who experience a wrongful loss are only entitled to the “market value” of the pet. So for any adopted pet, this would be roughly the cost of adoption.

According to this story in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, that could change as the Supreme Court has decided to take up the issue. We will certainly be watching this with interest.
